Ricky Ponting picks the best batsman between Virat Kohli and Steve Smith

Freinds There are many batsmen who are making mockery of their rivals in international cricket and it is tough to pick one among the whole lot. From Virat Kohli to Joe Root, Kane Williamson to Babar Azam, these talented individuals have been the go getters for their respective teams.

One name, which is missing from the list is Steve Smith. The former Aussie skipper is currently serving one year ban, owing to his involvement in ball tampering. Ricky Ponting was one of the best batsmen of his generation and when he was asked to choose one from Virat and Smith, his vote went to the former, considering Smith’s absence from international arena.

“Right now, he (Kohli) is because Steve Smith is not there. (But) if Steve Smith was playing now, I’d have him as the number one player in the world. That’s how high in regard I hold Steve Smith – what he’s done the last three or four years with his game and (he’s been) able to lead an Australian team to so many wins the way he has (batted),” Ponting was quoted as saying by cricket.com.au.

He also lauded Steve Smith for his terrific performance in the Ashes.

“The Ashes summer last year was just some of the best and purest batting as you’re ever going to see. To do it on the big stage in an Ashes series, and to do it on the first day of an Ashes series when it counts the most, says a lot about him.
