Top 5 Acts Of Sacrifice And Selflessness In The Cricketing World!
They say it's important to be a good person before anything else. Cricket is all about the entire 'Team' rather than individual performances and often we have seen self-less acts by cricketers where they have put their team ahead of them. Let's have a look at 5 such instances.
1.When Gautam Gambhir Gave Away His Man Of The Match To Virat Kohli
This happened in the year 2009 when India was chasing a mammoth 315 against Sri Lanka. Kohli and Gambhir then stitched an unbelievable partnership of 224 runs and while the current Indian Captain got out after scoring a century, Gambhir remained unbeaten on 150. Post the game, while the left-handed batsman was adjudged man of the match, he decided to hand- over his trophy to Kohli instead as the crowd burst into a 'Big Round Of Applause'.
2. When Mark Taylor Refused To Overtake Sir Don Bradman's Record
Yes, you read that right. In the year 1998 Australia was playing a Test-Match against Pakistan. On day 2 of the game, Mark Taylor who was in tremendous touch was cruising and had reached a score of 334 * equalling Sir Don Bradman's record as the highest Test score as a captain. What happened next certainly left everyone in shock. The former left-handed batsman declared the innings and when asked about the reason, he stated that he wanted to be in the record books right there with Sir Don Bradman and he saw that as a great opportunity.
3. Robin Uthappa Letting Rohit Sharma Score 264!
Nobody can forget the game when 'Hitman' created a 'World Record' of the highest score ever in One Day International Cricket. When Uthappa came into bat in the 41st over, Rohit Sharma was batting on 155 * and by the end of the innings the right-handed wicket-keeper batsman only faced 15 deliveries and made sure that Rohit makes full use of his great form.
4. Javagal Srinath's Sacrifice For Anil Kumble's 10 Wicket Haul Against Pakistan
What happened in the year 1999 at the Kotla in Delhi is something no Indian Cricket Fan will ever forget. It was lucky enough to be there and witness it live and let me tell you- "The feeling was as brilliant' as you think it would have been. During the game, while Kumble just required a few more wickets and there was no chance of a Pakistan victory, Srinath literally bowled way outside the off- stump, sometimes- leg-stump as well and did whatever it took to not take a wicket and allow 'Jumbo' to write his name in the record books.
5. Mahendra Singh Dhoni
It would be unfair to narrate one specific incident because this man is certainly the 'Father of all Sacrifices'. He was on 'National Duty' while his wife Sakshi gave birth to his daughter Ziva and more often than not, he lets his batting partner score the winning runs if he thinks they deserve it more. He also always stays at the backend of things, especially after winning a trophy while he enjoys watching the youngsters celebrate. His biggest sacrifice so far has been batting lower down the order for India all these years while being the captain, he could have easily come up the order as he had all the ingredients to do so.
